This is a translation that I did back around the year 2000. I chose this work because I was concerned that some of our dear and beloved brothers and sisters have yet to realize that Imams Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (both notable Ḥanbalī scholars of their time) were in fact not entirely against the science of tasawwuf (tazkiyyah, or purification of the soul—call it what you will!), but merely the actions and statements of some of its proponents. There is a big difference. Unfortunately, people today tend to want to throw the baby out with the bath water, as it were. I know, probably not a good analogy for dealing with the sacred science of the heart and soul, but the point is hopefully well-taken.
